Taxis that travel around and pick up passengers are divided
into two main types; regular taxis and deluxe taxis. Additionally,
there are call taxis to be requested to give a ride to passengers
at specific spots for a higher rate. Regular (ilban) taxis,
usually silver-colored or rarely black, have a blue or green
sign on top, while most deluxe (mobeom) taxis are black with
a yellow sign on top.
Vacant taxis are indicated with a signed lamp (Bincha) on
their front window. Regarding communication between passengers
and drivers, some taxis specially offer a free interpretation
service system in them. In addition, most of Daegu taxis have
a destination guide board inside of them, in which names of
major facilities such as hotels and shopping centers are listed
in English, Japanese and Chinese. Otherwise, it is advisable
for foreigners who cannot speak Korean at all to mention the
landmarks in Korean like big buildings and attractions near
their destination.
|
|
¡à Fare
Fares are metered and depend on both distance and time traveled.
Tips are not required generally.
|
|
Regular Taxis
The fare starts at 1,500 won for the first two kilometers. After
the basic fare, each 177-meter driving costs 100 won. If the
taxi travels slower than fifteen kph, each 43 seconds of driving
adds an additional 100 won for traffic congestion. An additional
20% surcharge is added between midnight and 4:00 am. |
|
Deluxe Taxis
The fare starts at 2,500 won for the first three kilometers.
Each additional 221-meter operation costs 200 won. An additional
200 won is added to each 54 seconds of traffic congestion if
the taxi travels slower than 15 kilometer per hour. No surcharge
is requested even between midnight and 4:00 am. Deluxe taxi
drivers usually provide higher quality services. |
|
Call Taxis
People in non-accessible areas from the public transportation
need to use call taxis for a pickup. The taxi will usually arrive
within 10 minutes after a call. Some companies may add a 1,000-won
surcharge to the metered fare. In some cases the passenger wants
to board or to get off at a rarely inhabited location, the surcharge
may be slightly higher. |

¡à Express Buses
|
|
Daegu is interwoven with 4 major highways; Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan)
Highway, 88 Olympic Highway, Jungang Highway and Jungbu Highway),
so land surface transportation is comparatively efficient.
Highways between Daegu and Pohang and Daegu and Gimhae are
under construction for completion in 2005. Gyeongbu Highway
(Seoul-Busan Highway) connects the city with Daejeon and Seoul
in the north, and Gyeongju and Busan in the south. 88 Olympic
Highway connects the city with Goryeong, Hapcheon Haeinsa
Temple, Namwon, and Gwangju. Guma Highway (Daegu-Masan Highway)
connects the city with Masan and Changwon. Jungang Highway
connects the city with Andong and Chuncheon. From Express
Bus Terminals near DongDaegu Train Station, buses run throughout
the nation.

Approximately eighty-eight bus routes connect Daegu's farthest
corners, in which thirty-one bus companies operate 1,719 vehicles
throughout the city. There are three kinds of buses running
in the city. The 'Ilban Bus' is a basic city bus while
the 'Jwaseok Bus' is a more comfortable and more expensive
city express bus.

Maeul Bus
The 'Maeul Bus' is a kind of shuttle bus that runs
with a short-distance service to connect transitional points
including subway stations and bus stops. Usually these buses
are smaller and cheaper than normal buses.
Since destinations are written only in Korean, Hangeul, on
buses it is better to know your bus number and routing in
advance. Bus route guide machines for foreigners are
located at some busy bus stops downtown. To stop your bus
at your destination on board, push one of the stop buttons
along the inside walls of the bus.
Bus Fare
Bus fares can be paid with cash, token or a transportation
card when you board. Since the transportation card is not
available for Maeul Bus yet, bus fares have to be paid in
cash for Maeul Bus.
